This ‘Magic Spell’ was written as a part of an assignment for Silvia Hartman’s distance learning course that said, “Write something to change the fabric of reality.”

I invoke you, Gods of Rain
To bring some living rain
On the dusty city of Delhi!
On the dusty trees
that are waiting for a wash!
On the dusty roads
that are waiting to be cleaned.
On the clouds of smog
that need to be settled down,
even for a while.I invoke you, Gods of Rain
To visit Delhi
at this unusual hour.
To relieve the thirst of the land,
to clean it up from
desert dust.I can feel your movement in space!
Come to Delhi
and come in peace!Bring the rain, the living rain,
Bring the freshness and new start!
Bring the promise of more to come
When monsoons do visit us.
But for now, a December rain
May it happen, now, and fast!

When I was re-reading this evocation after a week, it started raining! The rain was gentle and it stayed through the night. In the morning everything around was clean and bright; the gentle scent of washed foliage permeated the cool air. A local park in New Delhi at December-end felt like a park in the Russian north in early autumn.
